America has been a place of diversity for a long time. Our large coastal cities have been major points of entry for individuals from all over the world. However, recent decades have seen a change. Many places in the United States where only a few types of people have traditionally lived in large populations are seeing significant numbers of individuals from various places and cultures come to these locations to live and work.
As a result, diversity in the workplace has never been more important than it is today. Many workers in America are seeing types of new fellow employees that they have never seen before. Sometimes, these workers wear clothes which look out of the ordinary to them. Sometimes they have accents which make it hard for them to be understood, even if they speak excellent English. Sometimes, they eat foods which seem unusual to people who have a traditional American diet, and so on.
This cultural diversity can create a lot of problems. Workers who are not used to people from other cultures may feel confused, upset, threatened and angry. The new employees may feel isolated and out of place.
This is where good training about workplace diversity can make all the difference. An atmosphere of community and trust can be created by making employees realize that cultural differences are things that enable each individual to bring something special to the workplace, something that can contribute to productivity, efficiency and employee satisfaction.
In addition, history has taught us that people who initially feel strange and foreign to one another often have these emotions because of ignorance, misunderstandings and assumptions about each other that have little to do with the truth. Good workplace diversity training can explain and examine these issues and the problems which they may cause. This approach can lead to a better understanding of the fact that languages, appearances, customs, et cetera, may vary, but most people are essentially the same, which is to say that, deep in our hearts, our basic “gut level” thoughts, feelings, hopes and dreams are not so different, and the majority of us wish to get along with our neighbors and coworkers and be valued and respected members of both the workplace and the community.
Finally, a good training program will take into account the fact that we do not live in a perfect world. Even after a long and thorough session of workplace diversity training, there will likely be problems which require attention. As a result, provision needs to be made for things like additional and ongoing training and dealing with issues in small groups or one to one whenever it becomes necessary. This process will help to keep workers moving toward the goal of workplace respect, cooperation and unity.
